Travel insurance can help with unexpected costs before or during a trip, from emergency medical treatment abroad to cancellation, lost baggage and medical repatriation.

We compare travel insurance options available from the insurers we work with and help you understand the limits, excesses and exclusions before you choose a policy.

What does travel insurance cover?

Cover varies between insurers and policies, but travel insurance can include the following benefits.

Emergency medical expenses

Covers eligible medical treatment if you become ill or are injured while travelling.

Medical repatriation

Covers eligible costs of returning you to Cyprus when medically necessary.

Trip cancellation or curtailment

Can reimburse non-refundable costs if you cancel or shorten your trip for a reason covered by the policy.

Baggage and personal belongings

Covers loss, theft or damage, subject to individual-item limits and the precautions required by the policy.

Travel delay and missed departure

Selected policies provide benefits for qualifying delays or missed departures. Conditions and minimum delay periods normally apply.

Personal liability

Can cover your legal liability if you accidentally injure another person or damage their property while travelling.

Is Cyprus in the Schengen Area?

Schengen information last reviewed: September 2026.

Cyprus is an EU member and participates in Schengen cooperation, but it is not yet fully part of the Schengen Area. Border controls between Cyprus and Schengen countries have not been abolished.

The European Commission issued a positive assessment of Cyprus’s technical preparedness in July 2026. However, full participation requires a formal decision by the Council of the European Union. Travellers should check the latest official position before relying on Cyprus’s status.

Travel insurance for a Schengen visa

MINIMUM MEDICAL COVER
€30,000

Applicants for a uniform Schengen visa generally need travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 of cover.

The insurance must normally:
Be valid throughout the relevant Schengen territory
Cover the complete period of the intended stay or transit
Include urgent medical treatment and emergency hospital care
Include repatriation for medical reasons and in the event of death

Cyprus does not currently issue Schengen visas. A resident of Cyprus who needs one will normally apply through the consulate or authorised visa centre of the Schengen country responsible for the trip.

We can help you identify a suitable policy and request the appropriate insurance certificate. The relevant consulate or visa authority makes the final decision on whether the documentation is accepted.

Do you need travel insurance if you have an EHIC?

A valid European Health Insurance Card gives eligible travellers access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in participating European countries.

Treatment is provided under the same conditions and at the same cost as for people insured in the country you are visiting. This means treatment is not necessarily free.

An EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. It does not normally cover:

Private medical treatment
Medical repatriation or an air ambulance
Trip cancellation or curtailment
Lost, stolen or damaged baggage
Rescue costs
Travel or accommodation changes

UK-issued GHIC holders should check the countries covered by their card before travelling.

Single-trip or annual travel insurance?

Single-trip travel insurance

Single-trip insurance covers one declared journey between the start and end dates shown on the policy.

It may be suitable if you travel occasionally or need cover for a particular holiday or business trip.

Annual multi-trip travel insurance

Annual travel insurance covers multiple trips during the policy year. Each trip is subject to a maximum duration, geographical area and the other terms of the policy.

It may be more convenient or cost-effective for frequent travellers, but it is important to check the maximum permitted length of each trip.

Optional cover for activities and specialist trips

Standard travel insurance does not cover every activity automatically. Additional cover may be needed for:

Winter sportsCruisesScuba divingHiking at higher altitudesCompetitive sportsAdventure activitiesBusiness equipmentValuable personal belongings

Tell us what you plan to do during your trip so that we can check whether the activity is included.

What affects the cost of travel insurance?

Travel insurance premiums depend on several factors.

Your age

Insurers use different age bands and may apply maximum-age limits, particularly for annual policies.

Your destination

Worldwide cover, particularly for countries with high medical costs, can be more expensive than European cover.

Trip duration

Longer trips normally cost more to insure and may be subject to maximum-duration limits.

Medical conditions

Existing medical conditions may affect the premium, terms or availability of cover. Answer the insurer’s medical questions fully and accurately.

Trip cost and cover limits

Higher cancellation, baggage or medical limits can increase the premium.

Activities

Winter sports, cruises and higher-risk activities may require an additional premium.

Travel insurance and GeSY

GeSY is not a travel insurance policy.

Eligible Cyprus residents may have access to certain medically necessary or authorised healthcare abroad through an EHIC or applicable cross-border healthcare arrangements. These arrangements do not replace travel insurance and do not generally cover benefits such as cancellation, baggage or medical repatriation.

For planned medical treatment abroad, contact the appropriate health authority before travelling.

Frequently asked questions

Travel insurance is not required by Cyprus law for ordinary holidays. It may nevertheless be required for certain visa applications, organised trips or contractual arrangements.

Applicants for a uniform Schengen visa need travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 of cover. It must satisfy the applicable territorial, duration and medical-cover requirements.

Visa-exempt travellers are not generally subject to this visa insurance requirement, but travel insurance is still advisable.

No. An EHIC provides access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare under the rules of the country being visited. It does not normally cover private treatment, repatriation, cancellation or baggage.

GeSY is not travel insurance. Eligible residents may have certain healthcare rights abroad through an EHIC or cross-border healthcare arrangements, but conditions apply. These arrangements do not generally cover repatriation or other travel-related losses.

It depends on why the flight was cancelled and the policy wording. The airline or travel provider may be responsible for refunds or alternative transport. Insurance may cover certain additional, non-recoverable costs when a specified insured event applies.

Not automatically. You must answer the insurer’s medical questions accurately. The insurer may accept the condition, charge an additional premium, apply special terms or exclude related claims.

Annual cover can be convenient for frequent travellers. Single-trip cover may be more suitable for an occasional or unusually long journey. Compare the cost, geographical area and maximum trip duration.

If you need cancellation cover, arrange the policy as soon as practical after booking. Insurance will not normally cover an event that was already known or reasonably foreseeable when the policy was purchased.

Not automatically. Skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports commonly require an extension with its own conditions and exclusions.

Where the selected policy meets the relevant requirements, the insurer may issue a travel insurance certificate. The consulate or visa authority remains responsible for deciding whether the documentation is acceptable.
