What Cyprus law requires

Cyprus law requires third-party liability insurance on every vehicle. Driving without it is a criminal offence. Police typically issue an on-the-spot fixed penalty of €200 and can impound the vehicle immediately. If the case goes to court instead, a first conviction can bring a fine of up to €3,000 (plus up to a year in prison) and licence suspension of at least six months; a repeat conviction within the statutory period can reach €6,000 (plus up to two years in prison) and a 12-month suspension.

The Insurance Companies Control Service, ICCS, regulates the market. It sits under the Ministry of Finance.

The three cover levels

Learn the difference before you compare quotes. It changes what you pay.

Third-party liability
The legal minimum. It pays for injury or damage you cause to others. It does not cover your own car.
Third-party, fire & theft
Adds fire and theft cover for your own car. A common choice for older vehicles.
Full cover (comprehensive)
Covers damages on your own car too, including theft and fire. Check what each insurer excludes before you sign.

What changes your price

Two drivers with the same car can pay very different amounts.

Age and experience

Younger and newer drivers pay more.

No-claims history

A clean record lowers your price the most. This includes a record from another country.

Vehicle type and value

Engine size and market value change your premium the most.

Chosen excess

A higher excess usually lowers the premium.

Insuring a car in Nicosia

Traffic is heaviest on the ring roads and in the centre during rush hour. Many drivers here are new to Cyprus and insuring a car for the first time.

The hold-up is usually paperwork, not driving. You need a licence, the car's registration document, and photo ID. Bring proof of a clean record from your last country if you have one.

Insurer or broker

Cyprus has dozens of licensed motor insurers and prices vary. The cheapest insurer for you might not be the cheapest for your neighbour.

One insurer gives you one quote. A broker compares several and explains what each policy actually covers.
